CPWD Swimmers and Parents

Coach/Parent meetings

Coach Dave will be hosting two parent meetings during the junior/intermediate practice time slot (6-7pm).  Meetings will be held in the deck classroom (entrance is doorway behind the lifeguard chair on the stand side of the pool:

Oct 3:  For parents that are “New to swimming or competitive swimming

Oct 17: For general information / questions from all interested parents.

Practice Cancellation alert: No practices on Oct 6 or Oct 8 because of the Thanksgiving.

Reminder: Nov 3,4 Go Kingfish Swim Meet Entry forms – Due to Coaches by Oct 3.

EOSA region officials clinics – Oct 13 – this is a great opportunity to get trained as an official.  To have enough officials to run meets and time trials – every family should have at least 1 member qualified as an official.  The Time Keeper course is offered in both the morning and afternoon, you can choose when to attend (see Officials DB for details).  For experienced timers, consider taking a follow-on course – Strokes and Turns is also offered in both morning and afternoon along with other level II courses.  Taking S&T will provide a better understanding of many of the rules of swimming your swimmers are expected to follow.

Congratulations to Angus MacDonald on his re-election to the EOSA board as Director-at-large for the valley teams, representing CPWD and the other valley clubs (Arnprior, Perth, Petawawa, Deep River).

We are also happy to announce the Peter Buffam (new Regional Director for EOSA) has agreed associate himself with CPWD as a senior official.  With this, we can now get sanctions for meets and time trials we wish to hold.  He recognizes the hard work our team has been doing to build our officials group and will help us through this year as we close the final gaps.  We need parents to keep getting trained and getting experience so we can become self sufficient and do not need to rely on a huge favour like this in the future.

CPWD hosted meet – The original meet plan sent out at the beginning of the season included a tentative Nov 17 CPWD meet – this date will not happen.  Getting access to the pool is proving to be a challenge as it is busy with so many other programs and we are currently working towards Feb 9 as the date for the meet.  We are awaiting a decision of the CP Parks and Rec committee (as they have to agree to cancel public swims) to know if we can have the pool (If you know a town councilor put in a word for CPWD please.)

Thank-you to all the people that helped at the Welcome Back BBQ.  It was a great success and the weather was perfect.

Meets 101

With the issuance of the first meet package, this Dragon Bytes provide information to parents and swimmers about Swim Meets.

Meets – What To Expect and What To Bring

MEETS – WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHAT TO BRING

  • When the swimmer enters the change room, parents may want to find a seat.   Four and one half hours plus the warm up period may seem a lot longer when standing.
  • Parents and coaches may find the pool deck very warm, yet the swimmers seem to find it “nice” or a little cool.
  • After the warm up, swimmers are expected to remain with the team.   Swimmers can “visit” with their parents but should ask the coach first.
  • Before each event the coach may discuss things such as strategy, skill center, focus or just large stomach butterflies with each swimmer.
  • For each event swimmers may be divided by gender, age, and time.   The idea is to have athletes in the pool with those of similar skills.  In practice, this may not be the case; the entry time may out of date by many months.
  • The number of swimmers participating in an event will be divided by the number of usable lanes in the pool.  Thirty swimmers divided by 6 lanes equals 5 heats.  Each swimmer will be assigned a heat and lane number for each of their events.   Parents can find this information in “Heat Sheets” which are usually sold at the meet.    Coaches will help swimmers find their event, lane and heat numbers.   Note:  swimmers normally write the information down on anything handy – usually their arms.
  • After the swimmers have done their best, they need to discuss the event with their coach.   The discussion may include praise, swimmer thoughts and feelings, strategy refinements, skills to improve, focus or butterfly nets.
  • Between events swimmers may; rest, cheer for team mates, visit relatives or friends (ask first), read, do homework, play cards, talk, eat, drink, and be merry.
  • During the event, Parents are encouraged to cheer for their swimmer and/or any team mates.
  • After the event, Parents are encouraged to praise their swimmer and ask them about their thoughts and feelings.

What to Bring to a Swim Meet

  • CPWD Team Swim Suit
  • CPWD Team Cap

  • Team T-Shirt, Jacket, Sweats and deck shoes
  • Two towels; one used during the meet, one for after
  • Food: Nutritious lunch or snacks, water bottle
  • Lock for lockers
