Swim Clubs Within an Hour of Carleton Place

Swim Clubs Within an Hour of Carleton Place

Every competitive swim club within about an hour of Carleton Place, listed alphabetically with where each one trains and how to reach them. No rankings — just the list we wish someone had handed us.

If you live in the Ottawa Valley and your child wants to swim competitively, the first question is rarely "which club is best". It is "which pool can we actually get to on a Tuesday in February".

We get calls from families in Renfrew, Kemptville and Barrhaven who would be far better served by a club ten minutes from their own front door, and we would rather point them there than have them drive past three pools to reach ours. So here is the list we wish someone had handed us: every competitive swim club within roughly an hour of Carleton Place, in alphabetical order, with where they train and who to contact.

No rankings. No comparisons. Clubs are listed alphabetically, including ours. Details are as each club publishes them and programs change from season to season — check with the club before you plan anything around what you read here.

Arnprior Bluefish Swim Club

Trains at the Nick Smith Centre, 77 James Street in Arnprior — a 25-metre, six-lane indoor pool. The club runs a fundamentals group for younger swimmers new to the sport, plus junior and senior competitive groups training after school.

Capital Wave

An Ottawa club and something genuinely unusual: it is sanctioned for both swimming and water polo, the first dual-sport aquatic club in the province. Founded in 2012, it takes athletes from age six up through recreational and competitive streams, with a September-to-June season and a separate summer season.

Worth a look if you have one child who swims and another who would rather play a team sport in the water. About 45 minutes from Carleton Place. ottawawaterpolo.com

Carleton Place Waterdragons

That is us. Every practice is at the Carleton Place Aquatic Centre, 359 Bridge Street, four days a week. Age-group competitive swimming plus a Masters group for adults.

Swim Ontario registers us as "Waterdragons", one word, which is worth knowing if you are searching for us. Our swim groups set out who trains when.

Goulbourn Sea Hawks

Based in Stittsville and serving the west end, which makes them the closest Ottawa-side club to Carleton Place — about 20 minutes down the 7. A full age-group competitive program.

Greater Ottawa Kingfish Swim Club

One of the city's larger clubs, formed in 1981 when the Gloucester and Ottawa Kingfish clubs amalgamated. Around 200 competitive swimmers plus a substantial pre-competitive junior program, training across several Ottawa pools.

Kemptville Bluefins

A summer club, and a good one to know about if you want your child in a racing environment for July and August without committing to a full winter season. Outdoor pool, ages five to sixteen, daily coached practices and weekend meets through the summer only.

About 50 minutes. Municipality of North Grenville

NCAC Swim

Not a competitive club in the Swim Ontario sense, and that is the point — NCAC has run pre- and post-competitive training in the valley since 2015, serving Carleton Place, Smiths Falls and the surrounding area. Hatchlings for six to eight year olds, Turtles for eight to eleven, an alternative competitive stream for swimmers returning to the sport, and adult stroke work.

A sensible first step if your child is not ready to commit to four nights a week. ncacswim.ca

Nepean Kanata Barracudas

The largest registered club in eastern Ontario, formed in 1990 from the Nepean Swim Club and the Bayshore Barracudas. The Nepean Sportsplex is its official home, with training also running out of Kanata pools.

Ottawa Y Olympians

Founded in the late 1960s and swimming out of the Carlingwood YMCA-YWCA until that building closed in 2012; the club now trains across a number of Ottawa pools. A small, long-established program.

Perth Stingrays Aquatic Club

Trains at the Perth & District Indoor Pool on Sunset Boulevard, about 25 minutes south of Carleton Place on Highway 7. A full competitive ladder — Bronze through Gold, age group and senior — plus Masters and para swimming.

The Perth pool has produced two Olympians, Mike Brown and Bailey Andison, which for a town of 6,000 is a remarkable record. Perth Stingrays

How to actually choose

Every parent starts by comparing programs and ends up choosing on drive time, because drive time is the thing you pay four times a week for eight months. Work out the round trip to each pool in the dark, in February, and be honest about it. Then go and watch a practice at whichever clubs survive that test. Coaches expect it, and twenty minutes on the deck tells you more about the fit than any website will.

If your club appears here with something out of date, or is missing entirely, email us at cpwd.pres@gmail.com and we will fix it. This list is only useful to the region if it is right.
